Diseases of the bowel are very prevalent with current statistics showing colorectal cancer as the 2nd most common cancer in Australia with both men and women equally affected, and evidence has shown that a colorectal surgeon is better able to provide patients suffering with these conditions effective diagnosis and the most appropriate intervention and treatment.
While some bowel conditions such as bowel and colon cancer are serious and may require immediate surgical intervention, there are many benign bowel, colon, anal and rectum conditions that require a specialist colonoscopy examination and the most appropriate surgical or non-surgical treatment from a colorectal specialist.
Conditions best managed by a colorectal specialist include haemorrhoids, fistulas, fissures, abscesses, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular disease and faecal incontinence. Although many of these conditions are not as serious as cancer, they do cause negative impacts on our ability to participate in normal day to day activities and are detrimental to our quality of life.
